9th Framework Programme - Horizon Europe

The European Commission presented its proposal on Horizon Europe, the 9th EU Research Framework Programme, on 7 June 2018. The European Commission drafted and approved a plan for the Horizon Europe to raise EU science spending levels by 50% to approximately €100 billion over the years 2021-2027.

Supporting scaleup growth with venture capital

The EEN is there to support growth. Many people think this means money. It is of course much more than this, but let´s stay with money. Most people know that we advise and help with EU funding. But since recently, the EEN also helps fast-growing young companies to win equity money. This applies if you either have successfully applied within the SME instrument or if you are considered a scaleup company.
In Hessen, there is a good infrastructure for growth support – like the biggest group of business angels in Germany, Deutsche Börse Venture Network (DBVN) and, of course, the state equity bank (BMH), the state bank (WIBank) and many other banks. So the EEN scaleup advisors of EEN Hessen set up a joint event with Business Angels, DBVN and further partners to organize a highly qualified contact between young growth companies and potential investors.
With the topic Matching Series A: Digital the event on April 10, 2018, in Frankfurt included thirteen companies across Germany to speak in front of fifty investors. The positive feedback from both sides now leads to a topic even closer to the sector group materials: Matching Series A: Hightech and Sustainability for Industry4.0. This will take place on Sept 6, 2018, again in Frankfurt. Applications are possible until August 2.

Working your way towards the SME Instrument

Within Horizon 2020, the SME instrument is one of the most attractive funding schemes, also because single companies can directly apply for money. To put it simple, a phase I grant of 50 kEUR as a flat sum is given by the EU commission for feasibility studies, a phase II grant of up to 2.5 MEUR finalizes the product development into market entry.
This attractiveness makes the program highly competitive, meaning the proposal has to be thought and written really well. Especially SMEs don´t write proposals every day, so a 2-days proposal workshop was organized by EEN Hessen together with the national contact point for SME. Restricted to ten participants with concrete plans for proposals, the „art of advanced proposal writing“ was taught and practised.
Hopes for the participants are of course that they succeed in the same way as the Frankfurt biotech startup Genome Biologics did, who just won 2.5 MEUR for their phase II project.

Company mission industry 4.0 – from Catalonia to Hessen and Hannover

Dedicated missions to foster international cooperations between companies have proven to be a successful and efficient tool for the Enterprise Europe Network. In this case, two EEN colleagues from the sector group materials set up a mission with carefully selected Catalonian companies to meet high-potential matching companies in Darmstadt/Hessen within the field of industry 4.0. The mission included company visits and a later visit to Hannover fair, but the core of the mission was the matchmaking event that was located in a new startup hub in Darmstadt. Forty participants and a highly positive feedback gave a promising result.
